Here's what you really need to know about my values and approach:
Therapeutic Values:
My Experience and Background:
I hold a Master of Divinity in Counseling and a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling. I have extensive CBT, DBT, and MET experience and am a certified Clinical Trauma Professional. My clinical experience includes 20 years of providing evidence based counseling to adolescents, adults, couples and families. I have expertise in counseling the areas of depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, addiction and recovery, grief and loss, trauma, LGBTQIQ issues, gender identity, parenting, and adoption. I provide individual counseling, couples therapy, family counseling, and group counseling and education. I also offer expertise in Christian counseling for those who desire to incorporate their faith into counseling or for those who have questions about their beliefs.
I earned a master's degree from the Campbell University Divinity School where I specialized in Counseling and Chaplaincy. I also earned a master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from the Campbell University School of Education. I received my Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and in Social Work from Meredith College in 1992. My experience has been primarily in non-profit, human services, hospital, and residential settings. I have worked with women, couples, adolescents, and families. I have extensive experience counseling women and couples struggling with infertility and adoption related issues, and working with parents struggling to lovingly parent children with attachment concerns, special needs, and problem behaviors. Most recently, I worked in a residential program for young mothers where I specialized in offering integrated Substance Abuse and Mental Health counseling, so I have specific expertise in co-occurring disorders, sexual and emotional trauma, and parenting in recovery. I also have expertise in and a passion for supporting people in healing from trauma and navigating grief. I worked for several years as part of the pastoral care team at a major hospital providing spiritual and grief counseling to patients and families. In 2014 I turned my professional focus towards establishing a private practice in Fuquay Varina and have since been working on certification in the area of sexual addiction.
Therapeutic Values:
- we deserve to be treated with dignity and respect
- we are doing the best we can given our current skills and experiences
- we can change
- we want to get better and be better
- we may not have created all of our problems, but we do have to live with them
- the therapeutic relationship is a safe place to explore issues, learn new ways of thinking and acting, and practice skills
